NWU to collaborate with UNIMA in teaching and research

Through various collaborations it has established with prestigious international universities, the University of Malawi is persisting in its drive to open international study opportunities for both students and staff members. On October 25, 2023, the institution, through the Department of Economics, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with North West University (NWU), based in South Africa.

The signing ceremony began with a presentation by Dr. Gowokani Chirwa, the Head of the Department of Economics. During his presentation, he highlighted some of the notable achievements by the Department’s students and staff members. Furthermore, he showcased some of the modern teaching and learning facilities that the University of Malawi possesses.

Representatives from both universities were excited to sign the agreement, which shall benefit all departments at UNIMA. In the MoU, the two universities agree that students and staff members shall engage in exchange programs. Additionally, the MoU has also created an opportunity for both universities to collaborate in joint supervision, research, teaching, and educational visits. This partnership also enables UNIMA to apply for government grants from the Republic of South Africa in collaboration with a member from NWU, which will help alleviate financial challenges.

In her remarks, Dr. Bernadetta Malunga, the Head of the Private Law Department, mentioned that one of the objectives of the University of Malawi is internationalization. As such, this collaboration has further elevated UNIMA’s global standing. Dr. Malunga further stated that the collaboration will increase knowledge and skills for both students and staff members through the sharing and exchange of ideas. She also assured the representatives from NWU that UNIMA is committed to implementing the collaboration.

Professor Verona Leendertz, Deputy Dean of Research and Innovation at NWU, expressed her excitement about collaborating with UNIMA. She explained that the collaboration will enable students and staff members to gain access knowledge and expertise available at both institutions, which will contribute to the ongoing pursuit of excellence in both universities.

Representatives of the two institutions further expressed their compact by exchanging gifts in the form of branded materials. Before departing from UNIMA, the representatives from NWU toured the campus, and were mesmerized by its spectacular infrastructure.
